Unsloth and Avalon IQ3_KS on the ITLab Bench

We tested Unsloth UD-IQ4_XS and Avalon IQ3_KS with Swift as a reference: Unsloth ranks first of 17, Avalon ninth. Tables by series and what changed in the test.

We measured two new builds of Qwen3.8 Flash Next on the 49 cases of the ITLab Bench, version 02.5, on the same machine and with Swift Flash Next as a reference. Unsloth UD-IQ4_XS scores 95.9 points and ranks first of 17 configurations; Avalon IQ3_KS scores 90.5 and ranks ninth. With one run per case, the top places are a statistical tie.

  • Unsloth, first. It scores 95.9 points: 0.3 above GPT-6.1 Sol + Pi (95.6) and 1.2 above Swift on the same engine (94.7).
  • Avalon, ninth because of one case. It ties Unsloth on office work (49 of 54) but fails C03, worth 6 points of the total: its Rust code doesn't compile because it calls `String::reverse`. With that case passed it would score 96.5.
  • Same weights. The 54 office checks, the 418 substantive checks and the weights match the earlier reports. We explain below what changed in the test.
  • The engines, separately. What it took to get each package running is in Avalon and Strata on 16 GB: our experience.

What we measured

Three configurations of Qwen3.8 Flash Next ran the full battery: 49 tasks covering reasoning, code, vision, long context and agentic work. Each task ran once and was evaluated before moving on. The agents under test don't see the rubrics.

Each row is a package of model plus engine. The IQ3_KS model only loads in Avalon, so these results don't separate the effect of one from the other.

The machine is the same as in earlier measurements: RX 9070 XT with 16 GB, Ryzen 7 5700X, 94 GB of RAM and NVMe, on Arch Linux. Only one model was on the card at a time, with the CPU capped at 80% and the desktop in normal use. All three configurations finished the battery with no infrastructure errors.

Scoring follows the same rules as the earlier reports:

  • Series N (analysis and office work): every check counts the same; the score is the percentage of the 54 passed.
  • Series C, M, A, Vision and L: scored with the per-exercise and per-check weights set by the test's authors.
  • Total: N 35%, C 20%, M 20%, A 10%, Vision 10% and L 5%.

The full method is in the 10-model report.

What changed in the test

This version adds 8 checks to the battery, which goes from 534 to 542. All of them are format gates, which check whether the delivery is usable and add no points:

  • N14: 3 delivery gates, one per case. It's an informational exercise that doesn't count toward the total, and we already noted this rule in the GPT-6.1 Terra note and the Pi agent note.
  • C01, C02, C03, M09 and M10: one delivery gate each, separate from the compile gate.

That's why the tables can be read together: they're still the same 54 office checks and the same 418 substantive checks, with the same weights. The three new configurations passed all 8 gates, and recalculating their scores without them gives the same result.

The 14 earlier rows keep their published scores. They have the N14 gates, but the 5 C and M gates weren't applied to their responses, except the M10 gate on Swift + Pi + Ponytail.

There's one more difference in conditions. The new configurations ran with a system instruction asking the model to finish reasoning and deliver a visible final answer. Nine of the earlier rows keep 38 to 41 cases answered before that instruction existed. We didn't measure its effect.

Rows in bold are the two models tested; Swift + Strata 0.2.10 is the reference. The "Measured" column separates this round's rows from those published in October.

The top five are within 1.3 points: with one run per case, there's no clear winner among them. Swift appears twice, at 94.7 and 94.6. It's the same model on another version of the engine and the battery, and it changed on several checks without our being able to pin that on one cause.

Avalon IQ3_KS ranks ninth because of programming: at 70.0 in C it gives up 6 points to a model with a perfect score. In the other series it's at or near the top.

Another possible order: every check counts the same

This order counts the checks passed across all series, as if each were worth the same. It takes in the 418 substantive checks of the six series. Format gates and the informational exercises N13, N14 and M08 stay out. GPT-OSS 20B records 375 because it has no Vision, so it has no rank.

Each table runs from highest to lowest score; ties share a rank. "Checks passed" counts the substantive checks passed in the series, without format gates.

Avalon's reading drops because of the four image cases: without them it reads at 551.6 tok/s, against 869.8 for Swift and 556.0 for Unsloth. On images, the engines don't read the same number of tokens and vision runs on the CPU, so that figure doesn't measure the same thing. Swift generates 33% faster than Unsloth on the same engine, although Unsloth uses a different `top_p` and a hand-built pack. The speed detail, with the control tests, is in the engine note.

What it means for choosing a model

  • None of the three wins everywhere. Unsloth does best on office work, Swift on agentic work and speed on its engine, and Avalon ties on office work but loses one programming case.
  • They fail different things. All three have 6 failures in scored cases, and Swift and IQ3_KS overlap on only two. One case can move several points.
  • These results apply to this machine. Test with your own cases and keep a human in the loop for figures, regulations and security.

Limitations

  • One run, with temperature above zero. Gaps of one or two points can be noise.
  • Rows from two rounds. The 14 earlier rows ran before, on another version of the battery and, in some cases, of the engines.
  • Unsloth pack. It uses `--compat-bf16`, which according to Strata's notes can reduce quality on AMD. We didn't measure that effect. The model is no longer on the machine, so repeating its figures means downloading it again.
  • Refusals. The battery doesn't measure them, even though Swift is an abliterated build.
  • Weights. The series weights are ITLab's call, and the weights in C, M, A, Vision and L were set by the test's authors.

Frequently asked questions

Did Unsloth beat GPT-6.1 Sol? In this table it's 0.3 points above Sol + Pi and 0.9 above Sol, with one run and in different rounds. That's a statistical tie, not a proven lead.

Why does Avalon IQ3_KS rank ninth if it ties at the top on office work? Because of C03, worth 6 points of the total. Its Rust code doesn't compile. With that case passed it would score 96.5.

Did the test change from the earlier reports? It adds 8 format gates, which add no points. The 54 office checks, the 418 substantive checks and the weights are the same.

Which is better, Strata or Avalon? This data doesn't say, because IQ3_KS only loads in Avalon. Our experience with both is in this note.
